American History Talk with Dr. Lizzie Rogers

We are pleased to announce Dr. Lizzie Rogers; our Curator is back this 2026 season to host her second series of history talks at Bowood House & Gardens.

During her research into the family history, she will be discussing the significant relationships in  politics Lord Shelburne had with America during its turbulent history in the run up to the Declaration of Independence over 250 years ago.

Our exhibition “1776: Secrets, Spies and the American Revolution”, will be discussed in greater depth bringing to life the stories and hidden history of this fascinating period.  Discover how the Americans and British used ingenious methods to carry secret messages, from using invisible ink to hiding notes in unsuspecting places. It will finish with the Treaty of Paris, and the impact of the Revolution on Lord Shelburne's career.
